In a powerful statement of inclusivity and commitment to student well-being, the Mountain View Whisman School District (MVWSD) board unanimously passed a resolution on March 20, reinforcing its dedication to protecting LGBTQ+ students.
The resolution affirms the district’s commitment to fostering safe, inclusive learning environments where all students—regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity—feel a true sense of belonging. The board emphasized that MVWSD remains a firm advocate for equity and justice, rejecting any efforts to undermine LGBTQ+ identities.
A Clear Message of Support
Interim Superintendent Jeff Baier underscored that the resolution is not just symbolic but a clear message to students, families, and staff that MVWSD prioritizes inclusivity. “At MVWSD, we stand with our LGBTQIA+ students, families, and staff—now and always,” Baier stated in an email to families.
School board member Devon Conley stressed the importance of standing firm during a challenging time for the LGBTQ+ community, especially in light of recent federal policies. “I think we need to be very clear in our commitment to everyone in our community, but especially those who are gender nonconforming—who are being targeted explicitly,” she said.
A Stand Against Federal Policies
The resolution comes amid a wave of federal actions seeking to curtail LGBTQ+ rights, particularly for transgender individuals. Recent executive orders have targeted transgender students’ participation in school sports, gender-affirming healthcare access, and military service. Despite these measures, MVWSD has remained steadfast in its policies, continuing to allow students to participate in sports based on their gender identity.
This move aligns with broader efforts across Santa Clara County, where other school districts and the county’s Board of Education have passed similar resolutions in support of LGBTQ+ students.
Continuing the Fight for Equality
As national debates continue, Mountain View Whisman’s resolution sends a strong message: the district will not waver in its support for LGBTQ+ students. By passing this resolution, MVWSD ensures that its schools remain spaces where every student—regardless of identity—can thrive and feel valued.
