Cardinal Snap Losing Streak and Build Momentum Ahead of Virginia Series
After a tough weekend sweep at the hands of Cal, the Stanford Cardinal baseball team wasted no time getting back on track, securing a 5-1 victory over San Jose State at Sunken Diamond on Monday night.
Fast Start Fuels Cardinal Win
Stanford wasted little time establishing control, with Jimmy Nati setting the tone early. In the first inning, Nati ripped an RBI double to center field, bringing home Trevor Haskins to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead.
The offense struck again in the third inning when Brandon Larson drew a bases-loaded walk, allowing Haskins to score once more, doubling Stanford’s lead to 2-0.
From there, Stanford relied on its pitching and defense to keep the Spartans off the scoreboard, maintaining the lead through the middle innings.
Seventh-Inning Surge Seals the Win
The Cardinal broke the game open in the seventh with a three-run explosion. Charlie Saum delivered the biggest hit of the inning, driving in Haskins and Tatum Marsh with a clutch two-RBI single.
Shortly after, with Nati on third, Brady Reynolds lifted a deep sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Nati to score and extend Stanford’s lead to 5-0.
San Jose State managed to scratch across a run in the eighth, but it wasn’t nearly enough to threaten Stanford’s comfortable lead.
Dominant Pitching Leads the Way
Stanford’s pitching staff delivered a stellar performance, keeping San Jose State’s offense in check throughout the game.
- Nick Dugan got the start and tossed four shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out four, earning his second win of the season (2-0).
- Ryan Speshyock followed with two innings of work, allowing just one hit while striking out three.
- Toran O’Harran, Ty Uber, and Ben Reimers each pitched an inning to close it out, with Uber allowing the only Spartan run.
Looking Ahead
With the win, Stanford improves to 16-6 on the season and heads into a crucial three-game road series against Virginia with momentum on its side. The series kicks off on Thursday at 4 p.m. PT, followed by games on Friday and Saturday.
The Cardinal will look to carry this energy into Charlottesville as they face a tough Cavaliers squad in a pivotal non-conference showdown.
