Walgreens is moving forward with a massive store closure initiative, shutting down 500 locations in 2025 as part of a $1 billion cost-cutting strategy announced by CEO Tim Wentworth last fall. Over the next several years, 1,200 underperforming stores across 33 states will close, significantly reshaping the company’s retail footprint.
With around 8,500 stores nationwide, Walgreens has admitted that nearly 25% of its locations are not profitable. By 2027, one in seven Walgreens stores will be shuttered, aligning with similar downsizing strategies seen across the pharmacy industry. CVS, for example, recently concluded a plan to close 900 stores as part of its own restructuring efforts.
California Among the Hardest-Hit States
California will bear the brunt of the closures, with more locations shutting down here than in any other state.

Why Walgreens is Downsizing
The decision to close these stores comes amid rising operational costs, shifting consumer habits, and increased competition from online retailers. The company has acknowledged that many locations are struggling to remain profitable, forcing Walgreens to re-evaluate its nationwide footprint.
Executives have hinted that additional closures may still be on the horizon as the company continues to assess store performance.
What This Means for Consumers
With fewer physical locations, many customers may experience longer travel times to the nearest pharmacy, while others could switch to mail-order prescriptions or online alternatives. The trend of major pharmacy chains closing stores suggests a shift in how Americans access healthcare and prescriptions.
